IoT is changing. Over the years, it has moved beyond a bunch of connected sensors. A couple of years ago, many of the IoT projects were surrounding monitoring use cases. Companies needed to know locations of assets, whether a machine stopped working, or if a threshold was crossed. A small delay of a couple of milliseconds didn’t really matter at that stage. Services were not impacted because data arrived a few seconds late.
That’s no longer the case for many modern IoT use cases. Today’s IoT is being used in telematics, robotics, industrial automation, smart camera applications, and AI-driven systems. These are not just basic monitoring tools. These are decision driven systems that take actions in real-time. Suddenly, latency becomes a serious KPI.
Simply put, latency is the delay between something happening (the input) a decision being made by the system (the thought process), and an action the system undertakes (the output). While it may sound technical, the impact cannot be understated. When latency is too high, a warning arrives too late, a robot reacts too slow, or an AI system makes the decision after the moment has passed. This is why latency is now one of the most important factors in modern IoT.

The biggest shift I’ve seen comes from observation to action.
Not too long ago, many of the IoT deployments were focusing on data collection. A connected device sent information to a specific platform, and a specific person looked at it at a later moment. That of course is a proven model, and it still widely exists. Think about smart metering, environmental monitoring, and other use cases where timing is less critical.
However, many of the newer IoT services, especially with AI integrated, are being built around immediate action. A fleet manager cannot wait when it detects risky driving. A factory robot needs to make dynamic decisions based on changing conditions. A vision-based system needs to detect problems before defective components are moved further down the line.
In all these cases, response time (in other words, latency) is part of the service value. If the system cannot respond fast enough, it no longer delivers the result the customer actually needs.
The need for speed in telematics
Telematics is a good example of how latency has become more important over time.
In the beginning, telematics was mostly associated with vehicle location and route history. That was useful, it still is, but it’s not especially time sensitive. A delay of a few seconds, or even longer, usually does not ruin the service.
Today the market demands much more. Fleet operators and car manufacturers want driver behavior insights, safety alerts, geofencing, predictive analytics to detect maintenance cycles, real-time vehicle status etc. These use cases tend to be sensitive to delay.
Let’s take safety alert as an example. If a system identifies harsh braking, or a collision risk then the alert needs to arrive almost instantaneously. A late warning is useless, whereas a timely one is useful.
This is where latency starts to shape a product’s quality. A telematics platform’s response time directly impacts the quality of service as well as the support for advanced services.
Simply put, low latency is no longer just a nice-to-have. It’s a must-have that can directly influence customer satisfaction.
In Robotics the need becomes a must
If telematics highlights the issue, robotics makes it impossible to ignore.
We are entering a world where Tesla shareholders approved a 1 trillion dollar pay package for Elon Musk if Tesla hits extreme targets. One of those targets is deploying 1 million humanoid robots.
These robots will interact with the real world. They move, stop, think, and respond to physical inputs. That means delay affects actual behavior.
In factories, robot arms need to react instantly to sensors. In warehouses, an autonomous vehicle needs to respond instantly to obstacles or route changes while communicating real-time with other vehicles.
If the response is delayed, the performance is affected. Precision suffers. Safety is compromised.
What makes robotics use cases so challenging is not only the level of latency, but also the consistency of latency. If one command arrives on time, but the next one arrives late, the system becomes harder to predict, harder to trust.
This is why robotics depend on both low latency as well as stable latency. The goal is not just fast communication, but also reliable responses, every single time.

AI makes IoT smarter, but only at the right latency
AI is often described as the technology that makes IoT smarter. That is true, but it also highlights the importance of latency.
Today’s AI-based IoT systems usually follow a simple process. A device captures data. A model analyses it. Then the system decides what to do.
If that process takes too long, while the answer may still be correct, it is no longer useful.
Think about a camera-based inspection system on a production line. If it spots a defect after the product has already moved on, the value is compromised. Or think about a worker safety system that identifies danger too late to prevent harm. In both cases, intelligence without timely action is not enough.
This is why many companies are rethinking where data is processed. Sending everything to a distant cloud may work for some analytics. But for time-sensitive decisions, it often makes more sense to process data closer to the source, at the edge. This is why the term ‘edge computing’ has become so popular these days. It is critical to have things at the edge in modern IoT design. Radios sitting on top of towers somewhere in the middle of nowhere are less valuable. Radios are now sitting around the premises. The same goes for core networks, which once used to be hosted in huge data centers far away. Critical network components, such as the packet gateway, are now being moved to the location itself.
It’s fair to say that AI does not necessarily remove the latency problem. However, in most cases, it makes that problem more visible.
Latency is not only a network problem
When I see people talk about latency, they often blame the network alone. In reality, delay can come from many places.
It can come from the device itself. It can come from the access network, the transport path, the way traffic is handled, the distance to the application, or the way the software processes information. Sometimes the problem is not connectivity at all. It is the number of steps between an event and a response.
That is why latency should be viewed end-to-end.
A company may have strong coverage but still suffer slow performance because data is sent too far for processing. Another business may have a good application design but poor responsiveness because too many systems sit in the path.
For modern IoT, architecture matters just as much as connectivity.
The business impact is real
It is easy to treat latency as a technical discussion, but its business impact is very measurable.
Low latency can improve safety. It can support better automation. It can make AI more useful. It can strengthen customer trust and enable more valuable service cases. In some cases, it can be the difference between a basic monitoring solution and a premium operational platform.
This matters for IoT MVNOs, telematics providers, industrial players, smart mobility companies, and anyone building more advanced IoT services.
As the market evolves, simply connecting devices will not be enough. Customers will increasingly judge IoT services by how well they perform in real conditions. They will care about whether alerts arrive in time, whether systems react smoothly, and whether connected intelligence actually improves operations.

That’s why latency matters more than ever.
In telematics, it shapes the value of real-time safety and fleet services. In robotics, it improves precision, responsiveness, and trust. In AI-based IoT, it determines whether insight turns into action at the right moment.
The next phase of IoT growth will not be defined only by how many things are connected. It will be defined by how quickly connected systems can respond when it matters.
And in that world, latency is no longer a detail. It is a core part of the outcome.
