M-EDGE Network is proud to highlight a reference project delivered with Telenor: a multi-vendor 5G Standalone (5G SA) core network featuring an autonomous edge site in Svalbard, approximately 2,000 km from the central core near Oslo.
Few places are as remote as Svalbard, where connectivity to the mainland relies on a link that can be vulnerable to severe weather and infrastructure incidents. To address this challenge, the network was designed to remain operational under two distinct scenarios.
Under normal conditions, the local edge site works in coordination with the central core in Fornebu, while local traffic breakout helps keep latency low. If the connection to the mainland is interrupted, the local core automatically takes over, maintaining local network operations without requiring manual intervention.
The solution’s operational resilience has been validated through simulation testing. When the link was interrupted, devices reconnected to the local core within moments, demonstrating the network’s ability to maintain local connectivity even when the connection to the central site is lost.
Multi-vendor integration at the heart of the solution
M-EDGE Network enabled this architecture by integrating network functions from two specialized vendors:
- AxyomCore provides the 5G control plane and user plane.
- Summa Networks provides subscriber data management and policy control.
M-EDGE Network was responsible for integrating the different network functions and bringing the solution from proof of concept in Telenor’s Fornebu lab to deployment in Svalbard. M-EDGE Network continues to provide maintenance and support for the overall solution.
This project demonstrates how multi-vendor integration and autonomous edge capabilities can help deliver resilient mobile connectivity in remote locations, where network availability is critical and access to centralized infrastructure cannot always be guaranteed.
